Impact of Major Burn Injury
Burn injury remains a significant health challenge across the world. Major burn injuries, affecting over 20% of body surface area, are thankfully relatively rare in Scotland. However, they often occur in the most vulnerable individuals in our society and have long-lasting and profound consequences for those that survive.
The immediate physiological insult of major burn injury is immense, leading to significant inflammatory and immune responses that, although likely beneficial in small burns, are detrimental following a large burn. These can result in multi-organ failure, increased risk of infectious complications and death. Dr McGovern's research focuses on the physiological impact of major burn injury and it's lasting consequences.
