Summary

Using major artists and art movements – such as John Constable, Paul Cézanne, Vincent van Gogh, the Impressionists, the Pre-Raphaelites – as focal points we will explore the complex and reciprocal relationship between British and French painting in the nineteenth century, as well as the relationships between art and its social and historical contexts. 

Areas you'll explore include: 

  • Constable and British Romanticism 
  • French Realists: Rural & Urban contexts 
  • Whistler & Aestheticism 

 By the end of the course, you’ll be able to: 

  • Demonstrate a broad knowledge and critical appreciation of British and French painting of the nineteenth century. 
  • Place the artist and art works in within the social and cultural contexts of the time.  
  • Write coherently and perceptively on major artists and paintings covered in the course.

Anyone who has an interest in art history 

Qualifications/credits

20 Credits at SCQF level 7 (level 1 at undergraduate study)  

Can contribute towards a CertHE in art history 

Assessment

  1. Written presentation (800-1000 words) on single painting 20% 
  2. Compare and contrast written presentation on pair of paintings (800-1000 words) 20% 
  3. Essay (1500-2000 words) 40% 
  4. Visual test 20% (3 pairs of images; 1 hour)

Mode of study

The course will be delivered face to face and will include gallery visits  

Prospects

Can contribute towards a CertHE in the history of art.
