Biography

A lifelong interest in nature led to me doing a BSc in Zoology at UofG in the 90s. I then continued my education at James Cook University in Queensland, Australia with a Masters in Conservation Biology where I was a research assistant for the Herpetology Unit and studied rainbow skinks. I moved back to the UK and became Keeper of the Tropical House at Newquay Zoo, then moved on to my first museum job as a Natural History Research Assistant for the Kelvingrove Project back in Glasgow. This led to me becoming Curator of Invertebrates (Non-Insects) for Glasgow Museums and allowed me to build experience in museum skills such as exhibition development, specimen collecting, processing and conservation, databases, and education outreach. I then left to work as Curator of Zoology for The University of the West Indies in Trinidad & Tobago. There I developed the UWI Zoology Museum at the St. Augustine Campus and undertook a wide range of research and outreach activities. Finally I started work as a curator at UofG at the beginning of 2021.

Research interests

Research

I have published on a wide variety of species during my career including giant centipedes, sea cucumbers, harvestmen, oilbirds, moths, snakes and lizards, and tropical land snails.

I also undertake biological recording and have organised and attended numerous Bioblitz events.

I am particularly interested in endangered species in the museum collections.

Collections

I am responsible for the Zoology and Anatomy collections at The Hunterian. This includes vertebrates and invertebrates apart from the insects which are looked after by the Curator of Entomology.
