Room Guide
Brief directions to some of the most commonly used rooms on our campus:
Rutherford McCowan
- R127
Ground floor; go through main entrance to Rutherford McCowan, turn left and go through double doors. Turn right past the Hunterian in the South exhibit; the door to R127 is at the bottom of the stairs.
- R149
Ground floor; go through main entrance to Rutherford McCowan, turn right and past the seating areas, up a small ramp. Straight ahead through the door, past the toilets on your right, straight ahead through the next two doors. The door to R149 is on your left.
- R151
As above for R149; the door to R151 is on your right.
- R232
First floor; go through the Hunterian Museum and up the large staircase. Head through the door straight ahead (the door on the right). Once through the door, turn left and the door to R232 is straight ahead.
- R236
As above for R232; the door to R236 is on your right, before R232
- Café Rutherford
Ground floor; go through main entrance to Rutherford McCowan, the door to the café is straight ahead, next to the reception desk.
- School Office
Ground floor; go through the double doors to the Hunterian Museum, straight ahead through the double door again, and turn left. Down the corridor, the office is through the last door on your right.
Maxwell House
- M16
First floor; go through West entrance (closer to Easterbrook and Crichton Church) and take the door on the left to the stairs/accessible lift. Go up one floor and the door to M16 will be straight ahead.
- M6
Ground floor; go through West entrance (closer to Easterbrook and Crichton Church) and go straight ahead through the double doors.
- M7
Ground floor; go through East entrance (next to car park / bus stop) and go straight ahead through the door, and then straight ahead again through two doors.
- M8 (CUCSA Office)
Ground floor; go through West entrance (closer to Easterbrook and Crichton Church) and the door to M8 is the first on your right.
- Postgraduate Hub
First floor; go through East entrance (next to car park / bus stop) and take the door on the right to the stairs. Go up one floor. Accessible lift is available via the West entrance, and access to the Hub through M16.
School Office Opening Times
The School Office is the primary contact for various matters relating to current students, and are based in the Rutherford McCowan Buidling. School Office staff can:
- Deal with general enquiries
- Complete Council Tax exemption forms, certification letters
- Note attendance difficulties/absences
- Transmit messages
Please note that students should contact teaching and academic staff directly to make appointments, not via the School Office.

How to Find Us
Car
From the North, take the M74 (A74M) south to exit 15 Moffat/Dumfries, then follow the A701 to Dumfries town centre.
From the South, take the M74 north to exit 22 Gretna, signposted A75 Dumfries/Stranraer, then follow the A75 to Dumfries.
On arrival in Dumfries, follow signs for The Crichton. This will take you through the town centre and up Bankend Road, past the Mountainhall Treatment Centre. At the main entrance to the Crichton Estate, follow signs for the University Campus and the Rutherford McCowan Building.
Accessible parking is available at the entrance of the Rutherford McCowan Building, and at the front of Maxwell House.
All parking on campus is free; no permits are required.
Train
Dumfries has direct rail links to Glasgow and Carlisle. From these stations you can access routes across the rest of the UK.
The journey time from Dumfries to Glasgow is less than 2 hours. The journey time from Dumfries to London is less than 5 hours.
From the station, it is approx. 40 minutes walk to campus, or 5 - 10 minutes by car, taxi or bus.
Bus
A bus service runs roughly every 20 minutes from Dumfries town centre. You can Click Here for a complete set of timetables.
There is a direct daily bus from London to Dumfries and a regular bus link to Glasgow. Coach services from other parts of Scotland (Edinburgh, Borders), England, Wales and Northern Ireland are also available.
Bicycle and Foot
There are dedicated cycle routes and footpaths from the centre of Dumfries to the campus.
There is cycle parking available on campus.
Air
Glasgow International Airport is 90 miles away
Prestwick International Airport is 65 miles away
Edinburgh International Airport is 85 miles away
Boat
Belfast is only 90 minutes away by boat from Cairnryan in the South West of Scotland.
