Student Placement Expense Policy - Level 2

Student Placement Expense Policy 2025 - 2026

Guidance for School Placements: Level 2

The School of Social and Environmental Sustainability recognises the financial challenges that many of our students are facing and offers one of the most generous financial support packages of any teaching programme in Scotland. The Student Placement Expense Policy is reviewed every year.

  • The School of Social and Environmental Sustainability (School) will reimburse students for mileage (where public transport is longer than 90 minutes travel time each way OR where the student would fail to arrive at least half an hour before the start of the school day. Costs will be reimbursed at the agreed rate provided receipts are provided.
  • Students are expected to use public transport and use their Young Scot Card where they are eligible. Students who are ineligible for a Young Scot Card will be reimbursed for public transport provided receipts are provided.
  • In line with the University’s active travel policy, where short journeys can be made on foot, no expenses will be provided without prior approval from the Placement Co-ordinator.
  • If placed at the following schools, there is no eligibility for reimbursement of any travel costs incurred, as there would be an expectation that students would travel to these schools the same way that they would travel to the University of Glasgow Dumfries Campus: Brownhall; Calside; Cargenbridge; Georgetown; Heathhall; Laurieknowe; Lincluden; Locharbriggs; Loreburn; Noblehill; North West Community Campus; St. Andrew’s RC; St. Michael’s; St. Teresa’s; and Troqueer.
  • Where there is adequate public transport, students will be expected to use this method of transport during their placement. If for any reason public transport is not suitable, then students would need to apply for pre-approval for private transport reimbursement from Dumfries-Finance@glasgow.ac.uk for any of the following schools: Castle Douglas; Cummertrees; Dalbeattie; Eastriggs; Elmvale; Hecklegirth; Kirkgunzeon; Lochmaben; Newington; Springholm; and St. Columba’s RC.
  • In the unlikely event that it is not possible to place a student in a school within the 90-minute travel window, accommodation will be arranged by the Placement Co-ordinator for 5 nights per week (Sunday night to Friday morning) for the duration of the placement. Meals are not covered by the student expense policy.
  • Students choosing to reside outside of Dumfries and Galloway will be able to claim expenses from whichever is the nearest of, either the University of Glasgow Dumfries Campus postcode (DG1 4ZL), or term-time residence.
  • All students will be placed as close to their term-time address as possible in Dumfries and Galloway.
  • There is an annual cap of £1,000 per student which can be claimed from the University of Glasgow Dumfries Campus. Students who incur expenses beyond this amount are invited to apply for alternative sources of financial support where available or self-fund the remaining costs. Signposting to these resources will be provided.

Misinformation or fraudulent claims will be taken seriously and will be viewed as a breach of the Student Contract.
