Biography
I obtained my PhD in 2017 from Heriot-Watt University under the supervision of Prof Daniele Faccio. It's here that I got the opportunity to explore many aspects of nonlinear and ultrafast photonics before developing an interest in quantum optics. In 2018 I moved to the University of Glasgow as a Research Associate in the Extreme Light group before becoming a Lecturer in Physics and Astronomy in 2020.
In 2021 I was awarded a Leverhulme Trust Earlry Career Fellowship to develop a new quantum interferometry inspired approach to fluorescence lifetime imaging and, later in the same year, a Royal Academy of Engineering Research Fellowship which focuses on combining single photon sensing with machine learning that mimics the activity in the brain.
Research interests
My primary focus is on finding new forms of time-of-flight sensing using single photons. For example, if we combine single photon detectors with specific types of artificial neural networks that act like the brain what information would we learn to see? Would we be able to use this time information to see around corners or see through walls? Could we learn to see using less light and could we use this to gain quicker reaction times? This essentially gives us a new way of performing LiDAR measurements with applications in autonmous driving, and security and defence.
I also have a strong interest in quantum imaging, specifically trying to address if we can use quantum effects to build inherently new ways of imaging/sensing. This has led to a new form of holography that relies on the presence of entanglement, a new way to perform 3D microscopy that doesn't require and has pushed the boundary in the resolution that can be achieved for LiDAR and fluorescence lifetime sensing.
