Research interests

Professor Graeme Milligan has more than 30 years experience in exploring the structure, function and regulation of G protein-coupled receptors and their interacting proteins and in translating knowledge generated into selection of targets, screening and identification of small molecule regulators of these proteins and progressing such ligands in drug development programmes in disease areas ranging from neuropsychiatry to diabetes and obesity. In have been a Medical Research Council ‘Programme Grant’ holder for more than 15 years.
In recent years research focus has been in two main areas:

  • Organisational structure of G protein-coupled receptors: Implications for function and novel drug design;
  • The pharmacology, functional and translational potential of G protein-coupled receptors regulated by products of intermediary metabolism.

Approaches range through Quantitative Pharmacology, Biochemistry, Cell Biology, Physiology and Chemistry to novel techniques in Optical Physics.
