Biography

Lilong Xu received her PhD in Chinese Linguistics and Language Acquisition from the University of Cambridge, and her BA in English and Mathematics and MA in Linguistics and Applied Linguistics from Shanghai Jiao Tong University.

Before joining the University of Glasgow as Lecturer in Chinese in 2025, she was a Postdoctoral Researcher at Shanghai Jiao Tong University, working on bilingualism, bidialectalism, and language-related wellbeing.

She is currently engaged in collaborative research on L3 Chinese acquisition by Spanish–Catalan bilinguals.

Research interests

Fields of interest: 

  • bilingualism and multilingualism
  • linguistic approaches to non-native Chinese grammars
  • second/third language acquisition theory
  • formal linguistics
  • syntax
  • bilingualism/bidialectalism and aphasia.

Her research examines how learners acquire Chinese grammar across different developmental stages, considering factors such as language transfer, linguistic proximity, input, and positive evidence. She is also interested in the cognitive and psycholinguistic mechanisms underlying bilingualism, bidialectalism, multilingualism, and language-related wellbeing.
