SMLC Hispanic Studies lecturer Dr Maya Feile Tomes is on the longlist for the Sundial Literary Translation Award in the USA. Her submission, entitled ‘Faultlines’, is from a series of zines by Chilean trans activist Claudia Rodríguez, published together as an anthology (‘Cuerpos para odiar’) in 2024 by independent Spanish press Editorial Barrett. Rodríguez’ work deals with minoritised experience in Chile both today and in the 1970s–80s, offering a rare glimpse into complex lived realities under the Pinochet regime. 

The result of the Sundial Translation Award will be announced later this month at the Feria Internacional del Libro de Nueva York (FILNYC), New York’s Spanish-language book fair. Extracts from Maya’s translation of Cuerpos para odiar were also shortlisted in the UK in the John Dryden Translation Competition in September this year.
