Biography

Professor Eileen Cowey is Head of the Nursing & Health Care School, within the School of Medicine, Dentistry & Nursing. She qualified as a nurse in 1991 and worked in critical care and community settings, before completing a Master of Nursing (specialising in Health Promotion) in 1997 and a PhD in 2016.

Her current responsibilities include leading and managing the strategic direction of the Nursing & Health Care School, which consistently ranks highly in UK league tables for student satisfaction. Key activities include leading curriculum development, championing teaching quality, advancing internationalisation, and fostering interdisciplinary collaborations.

Research interests

Professor Cowey holds a PhD on end-of-life care in stroke and has published on acute stroke care topics such as continence management, pain management, palliative care, and patient safety, generally with an emphasis on mixed methods studies. She also has a strong track record of working in partnership to enhance research projects including systematic review and has led the development of best practice guidelines.

Teaching

Professor Cowey has extensive experience of undergraduate and postgraduate education and healthcare research, and has significant knowledge of leadership, academic development, and professional practice within the field of nursing education. A registered nurse in both the UK and in Singapore, Professor Cowey has a sustained interest in transnational nursing education and in workforce development and is actively involved in UK committees shaping nursing regulation and higher education. Her expertise spans academic leadership, mentorship, and fostering professional growth, with a focus on ensuring alignment between individual achievements and institutional goals.
