Primary Education with Teaching Qualification 2nd Year

Amanda's Story

After working and raising her own children, Amanda decided to follow her passion of becoming a primary school teacher. After going to college to complete her HNC in Childhood Practice, she felt ready to take the next step and joined the University of Glasgow.

“I was nervous joining an institution like this because I’d been out of study for so long, and I was older than other students. I worried about fitting in, but everyone was so welcoming."

Amanda joined our Primary Education with Teaching Qualification programme in 2020, and was looking forward to a new and exciting challenge.

"I didn’t just want to come to University for the sake of it. I wanted to study something I’m passionate about and being able to do that at such a prestigious University, while also staying in Dumfries & Galloway, was just perfect.”

Amanda joined the University as a mature student, and she explained that her life experience has allowed her to identify exactly what she wants to do once she graduates.

I want to be that positive role model in kids’ lives, to work with younger kids and give them the best start possible. I want to be that teacher that gives them a great experience at school and helps them to enjoy learning.”

Being from Dumfries & Galloway, Amanda thinks the region has a lot to offer students who wish to study at the University of Glasgow.

“I’m grateful that I have the opportunity to be part of this programme at the University of Glasgow in Dumfries, it is a lovely town and a beautiful area to study in. I love the beaches and forests – there’s plenty things to do and get involved in. I’ve met people and made friends from different programmes as well and it’s such a friendly campus and atmosphere.
