Summer School Structure and Schedule
The below is a proposed schedule for information only and is subject to change or amendment.
Monday 5th June 2023
11.00 - 11.45: Welcome and Introductions: Skills for University 1
We will begin by introducing the course leaders and welcoming you to the School of Interdisciplinary Studies.
This session is where we begin to explore dimensions of the university experience, beginning with the questions: ‘What is study at university for?’; ‘what kind of person is a university graduate?’ Across the study skills sessions you will be given an excellent grounding in what you can expect from undergraduate study – making you truly ready to hit the ground running in September.
11.45 - 12.30: Campus Tour with Student Ambassadors
A tour of Rutherford McCowan, Maxwell House, and Library led by our team of friendly Student Ambassadors. Our Student Ambassadors are all current students who are knowledgeable about the campus and all that university life in Dumfries has to offer. Students will have the opportunity to ask questions about the campus, our School and its programmes, and see the facilities on campus.
12.30 - 13.30: Lunch with Ambassadors and CUCSA
Get together for a special Welcome Lunch and a chance to get to know each other, your Student Ambassadors, and representatives from CUCSA.
13.30 - 16.30: Health and Social Sector Leadership 1
We will visit the Crichton Trust, the organisation responsible for the management of the Crichton Estate in Dumfries. We will be out in the estate exploring the global challenges of population ageing and climate change, and learning about the Crichton Trust’s plans to create an innovative “21st Century Village” adjacent to our campus. Research projects conducted by our students and staff in Dumfries have been important in developing the “21st Century Village” masterplan, which focuses on sustainable, intergenerational and ‘smart’ housing for a range of groups in need of affordable accommodation. While out and about in the Crichton you’ll be meeting and engaging with a range of staff, as well as getting a taster for what academic research, field trips, and seminars are like on our programmes.
16.45 – 18.30: Pizza and Games Night in Café Rutherford
Join CUCSA, Student Ambassadors, staff and your fellow students in Cafe Rutherford for pizza and games, including a quiz! Get to know everyone a bit better, and enjoy the buzz of student life in Dumfries.
Tuesday 6th June 2023
09.00 - 15.00: Environmental Science and Sustainability Field Trip
Did you know that our understanding of many fundamental concepts in marine biology began in studies of coastal habitats on the east coast of Scotland? In a combination of lab and field sessions, we will learn how to identify many marine species, explore their distribution on rocky and sandy shores, and demonstrate the adaptations that help them to survive in such changeable environments. Bring study shoes (waterproofs and wellies preferable!).
16.00 - 17.30: Study Skills 1
In this session we will demystify the kinds of assessments you may expect during your undergraduate experience. You have all written essays and undertaken exams successfully to earn your place. In what ways are assessments slightly different at degree level? What new skills will you need to develop? What new ways of teaching and learning will you encounter? We will discuss how to study independently and help you build a toolkit of key skills – from literature searching to presenting your work – which will help inform and enhance your university experience.
18.00 – 20.00: BBQ on the Teaching Garden Veranda
Join staff, Student Ambassadors and your fellow students at our BBQ hosted at the Rutherford McCowan Building, next to our Teaching Garden and outdoor veranda.
Wednesday 7th June 2023
09.00 – 12.00: Health and Social Sector Leadership 2
In this session we will focus on the importance of physical activity as a foundation for people’s health. Our staff and students at the Dumfries campus have conducted research on physical activity promotion, and this session will explore that evidence and how it has been translated into policy locally through the Dumfries and Galloway Physical Activity Alliance. During the session we will hear from academics, practitioners and current students about the challenges of communicating research and evidence to different audiences, ultimately leading to the question of how we influence policy and funding decisions in the health and social sectors.
12.00 - 13.00: Lunch
Your own time to explore the campus and grab lunch at Cafe Rutherford or one of the other options on campus.
13.00 – 14.00: Study Skills 2
In this session we will provide a summary of some of the key topics you have focused on during your visit, closing the main part of your experience with help and advice that you can carry forward with you.
Wednesday 14th June 2023
14.00: Study Skills 3 [Online Session]
This will be a session hosted entirely online. In it we will ask you to reflect upon your experience the previous week, consolidating some of the key dimensions of your experience in two very different disciplinary areas. We will take any questions you may have, and offer further advice on preparing to attend University in September.
