Professor Rick Maizels

  • Professor (Parasitology)

Biography

Rick Maizels is Professor of Parasitology at the Wellcome Centre for Integrative Parasitology in the University of Glasgow's Institute of Infection, Immunity and Inflammation

An immunologist interested in fundamental questions of how and why parasites manipulate the sophisticated mammalian immune system, and how that system has evolved in the face of parasite immunomodulatory strategies, Rick moved to the University of Glasgow in 2016.

Between 1995 and 2015 he held the Chair of Zoology at the University of Edinburgh, and was previously Professor of Parasite Immunology at Imperial College London (ICL).

Prior to his move to ICL in 1983, he held positions at the National Institute for Medical Research in London (1973-1976 and 1979-1983), as well as UCLA (1977-1979) and California Institute of Technology (1986-1977).

He was elected Fellow of the Royal Society of Edinburgh in 2002, and made a Senior Fellow of the American Asthma Foundation in 2010.

His laboratory focuses on the most complex parasites to invade the body – multicellular helminths –which cause widespread tropical diseases while displaying profound immuno-regulatory capability.

The central questions his group addresses are:

  • How do parasites manipulate the host immune system?
  • What is the impact of this modulation on immunological diseases?
  • What parasite molecules are responsible for immunomodulation?

Research interests

Summary

We aim to integrate detailed studies at the level of individual parasite molecules, with system-level immunology of suppressing inflammatory diseases and inducing protective immunity.  Our techniques combine molecular biology of parasite genes, protein function and structure, cellular immunology and host gene expression, and a range of pathology models representing allergy, autoimmunity and inflammatory bowel disease.

We study nematode parasites because they display remarkable biological properties and are tractable at a molecular and cellular level. For example, the filarial nematode is transmitted by mosquito and infects 120 million people in developing countries. Parasites can live for 5 years or more, acting as successful tissue transplants. If we can analyse how they achieve this feat, we may discover important new pathways to control both parasites and the immune system.

In particular, we are now testing the hypothesis that helminth parasites exploit the body's own safety mechanisms which have evolved to minimise the risk of autoimmunity. For example, regulatory T cells naturally arise to limit autoreactivity, but are also associated with chronic helminth infection. The expansion of regulatory T cell populations may underlie the epidemiological association between infection and reduced levels of allergy.
