Thinking about doing a PhD in Archaeology and want support in producing a proposal that will be competitive for funding?
Archaeology at Glasgow is inviting applications for a PhD Proposal Competition and Workshop. We are looking for candidates with excellent first degrees and cutting-edge research ideas, who will enrich and complement Glasgow’s vibrant and diverse research community. Apply by 5pm (UK) on 23 October 2022.
Our fieldwork and research projects cover periods from the Mesolithic to the Modern era and extend from the North Atlantic to Iraq, with regional foci in the prehistory of Scotland and Ireland, Early and Later Medieval Scotland including the Viking world, the ancient Mediterranean and Western Asia. We approach the past and its present from a range of theoretical, thematic and scientific perspectives, with research expertise in digital archaeology, landscapes and environments, engagement, and material culture. Most of all, we like to be challenged by our research students!

We will be holding the workshop events over two afternoons: 7 and 8 November 2022 on-line.
We anticipate being able to accommodate the 10-12 candidates, who will be selected by application.
If as part of your preparation you wish to visit the University of Glasgow and meet with your prospective supervisor, you are welcome to organise a suitable time.
Candidates invited to participate in the workshop will be able to spend time discussing their research proposal with prospective supervisor(s) and receive feedback from a wider group of academic staff on their short presentation.
Following the workshop, we will support the development of selected research proposals for PhD studentships from the AHRC via the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities. These scholarships are open to UK and international candidates.

Invitations to the Workshop and Competition will be issued to the successful candidates by 25 October 2022.
