Thinking about doing a PhD in Archaeology and want support in producing a proposal that will be competitive for funding?

Archaeology at Glasgow is inviting applications for a PhD Proposal Competition and Workshop. We are looking for candidates with excellent first degrees and cutting-edge research ideas, who will enrich and complement Glasgow’s vibrant and diverse research community.  Apply by 5pm on 3 November 2021.

2021 PhD Proposal Competition and Workshop

Our fieldwork and research projects cover periods from the Mesolithic to the Modern era and extend from the North Atlantic to Iraq, with regional foci in the prehistory of Scotland and Ireland, Early and Later Medieval Scotland including the Viking world, the ancient Mediterranean and Near East.  We approach the past and its present from a range of theoretical, thematic and scientific perspectives, with research expertise in digital archaeology, landscapes and environments, engagement, and material culture.  Most of all, we like to be challenged by our research students!

Because of the ongoing Covid pandemic we are unable to hold the workshop in person at the University, so we propose to hold the events over two afternoons 15 & 16 November 2021 on-line.

We anticipate being able to accommodate the 10-12 candidates, who will be selected by application.

If as part of your preparation you wish to visit the University of Glasgow and meet with your prospective supervisor, we are now in a position to welcome you. However, it is worth pointing out that the COP is being held in Glasgow from 31 Oct to 12 Nov, so accommodation will be scarce, and travel will be disrupted during that period.

Candidates invited to participate in the workshop will be able to spend time discussing their research proposal with prospective supervisor(s) and receive feedback from a wider group of academic staff on their short presentation. We will support the development of those research proposals for PhD studentships from the AHRC via the Scottish Graduate School for Arts and Humanities and the ESRC.

To apply, please fill out this online form

Deadline for applications is 5pm on 3 November 2021.

Invitations to the Workshop and Competition will be issued to the successful candidates by 8 November 2021.
We suggest that you get in touch with your proposed Glasgow supervisor prior to submitting an application.
