Biography

Dr Theo Pepler is a biostatistician and lecturer with experience in academia, industry, and government policy-oriented research. His expertise spans biostatistics, epidemiology, and multivariate analysis, with a track record in securing research funding as a statistical co-investigator.

Dr Pepler earned his PhD in Statistics from Stellenbosch University in 2014, focusing on the identification and application of common principal components. His earlier studies include a Master of Commerce in Statistics, where he developed methodologies for detecting active effects in unreplicated factorial experiments, as well as a BComm Honours in Statistics and a BComm in Economic and Management Sciences.

Prior to joining the Robertson Centre for Biostatistics in 2024, he contributed to policy-oriented research as a member of the Scottish Government’s Centre of Expertise on Animal Disease Outbreaks (EPIC), co-leading data management and data science initiatives. His research has informed veterinary public health practices and advanced statistical epidemiological methodologies for real-world applications.

Dr Pepler has held academic positions at Stellenbosch University and the University of Glasgow, where he has taught undergraduate and postgraduate courses in biostatistics and statistical methodology. His commitment to education extends to mentoring postgraduate students and leading applied research initiatives.

 

Research interests

I am passionate about statistical computing, free software and open science. My research interests are in biostatistics, clinical trials, multivariate statistics (principal component analysis), the bootstrap and other resampling methods, nonparametric statistics, and simulation modelling.
