Dr Cara Bezzina

  • Multimorbidity PhD Programme for Health Professionals Fellow (General Practice & Primary Care)

Biography

Dr Cara Bezzina is an Academic General Practitioner, experienced medical educator, and researcher at the University of Glasgow. She completed postgraduate training in the Scottish Highlands and, since achieving CCT, has combined clinical practice with academic roles. Originally trained in medicine at the University of Malta (MD), she also holds a Master’s in Medical Education (MMEd) and is a Member of the Royal College of General Practitioners (MRCGP) and the Academy of Medical Educators (MAcadMEd).

Her academic work focuses on multimorbidity and complexity in medical education. She was awarded a Wellcome Multimorbidity PhD Fellowship for Health Professionals, through which she is researching how undergraduate curricula can better prepare graduates to care for patients with multiple long-term conditions. This builds on her earlier Master’s research exploring how students engage with clinical complexity.

Dr Bezzina has extensive teaching experience across undergraduate and postgraduate levels. She has led the Communication Skills programme at Glasgow, led simulation sessions as a Clinical Lecturer for the University of Aberdeen, and contributed widely to faculty development. She also enjoys mentoring resident doctors and supervising students pursuing projects in medical education.

She contributes actively to professional networks, has organised and chaired symposia on complexity in medicine, and served as Strategy Lead for the Developing Medical Educators Group, shaping initiatives to support early-career educators. An experienced presenter and facilitator, she has delivered sessions at national and international conferences and is recognised for her engaging teaching style and commitment to communication excellence.

Her overarching vision is to contribute as an academic GP whose expertise in clinical practice, education, and research bridges the gap between medical training and the complex realities of modern healthcare.
