The Robert Burns World Federation and the Centre for Robert Burns Studies are delighted to announce their co-hosting of the first annual lecture in memory of Prof. Craig Sharp.

As a newly qualified vet with an interest in muscle performance and anatomy, Prof. Sharp would spend time working at Mossgeil Farm, where he also developed a keen interest in the farm’s former tenant, Robert Burns. Prof. Sharp’s professional interests took him into sports science where he became an eminent researcher and adviser to elite athletes including the British Olympic team. He did not, however, leave his love of the Bard, continuing to undertake independent research in various aspects of the poet’s life, including the events of the missing weekend of Hogmanay 1786 which he published in Studies in Scottish Literature. Prof. Sharp was a particularly special friend to the Centre for Robert Burns Studies, marking its founding with the gift of a Kilmarnock edition of Poems Chiefly in the Scottish Dialect. We are delighted to be able to remember and mark his contribution to Burns studies, and the wider Scottish cultural scene, with the establishment of this annual lecture series.

This first Lecture will be delivered by two inspiring people, Professor Nigel Leask and novelist Catherine Czerkawska. This tremendous line-up will present talks on two very different subjects:

Professor Nigel Leask: ‘Ploughman and Mechanics we’ - the Tarbolton Bachelor’s Club in Burns’ Poetic Development.

Catherine Czerkawska:  ‘Jean Armour, the Jewel of them all?’ - an exploration of Jean’s nature and thoughts about her relationship with Robert Burns.

There will be an opportunity to ask questions of both speakers afterwards.

This event is free to attend but tickets must be booked at https://www.eventbrite.co.uk/e/crbsrbwf-craig-sharp-annual-lecture-tickets-51955271616
