Glasgow Students impress at Code for Good Challenge
A team of students from the Universities of Glasgow and Edinburgh has won first prize in The Food Chain project category at the JP Morgan Code for Good Challenge, as well as coming a close runner-up in the overall final. The team worked with The Food Chain, a charity that supports people diagnosed with HIV by delivering free meals to them and their families each Sunday. The team's challenge was to devise a software system that calculated the optimal route for deliveries, taking into account the location of kitchens, patient dietery requirements, availability of drivers and a tight deadline for the delivery of each meal.
The team, including Glasgow students Mircea Iordache, Alexandru Malaescu, George Popa and Vlad Schnakovszki, took just 24 hours to successfully create a web based application for calculating the optimal routes for each driver. The team also developed an Android application for drivers that directed them along their itinerary and enabled them to report their progress. The team were even able to make their application available for other charities making deliveries of food around the world.
Commenting on the competition, Vlad said "The most important prize for us was that our project will be further developed by JP Morgan and used by the charity."
