About the BHF 4 Year PhD Programme

This BHF 4 Year PhD Programme is led by Professor Eleanor Davies and co-directed by Professor Godfrey Smith, and Dr Lorraine Work.

Research within the School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health (SCMH):

Each of these themes contains strategically linked groups of leading, internationally-respected academics who provide the highest quality supervision to students. Research links exist between staff in the cardiovascular groups and those in other Schools within the College, facilitating cross-school collaborations.

This scheme starts with an intensive first year of training in research techniques and theory, and three research placements, prior to a 3-year PhD research project. Each year, four fully funded scholarships are awarded to outstanding students with a strong scientific background. 

Stipend rates start at £19,919 per annum.

Based on the currently successful 4-year PhD schemes, the programme operates on a one-plus-three year format. The first year provides intensive multidisciplinary training and three 12- week Research Placements, leading to an MRes degree. This is followed by three years full-time research culminating in the submission of the PhD thesis.

Interaction between students from different years is encouraged via the monthly Research Forum and annual Scientific Retreat to facilitate sharing of experience and expertise and help establish long lasting scientific contacts.

MRes in Translational Medicine 

Course Information

The programme is part of a 4-year PhD with the first year being an Masters. The MRes is made up of three individual 12-week research placements after an intense two-week induction. Each project will be based on different themes with three different supervisors.

Induction

You will be required to attend an in-depth introductory programme, which will provide training in research ethics, statistics, project design, literature review and laboratory safety techniques.

Placements

The induction is followed by three individual research placements. These are at the core of this programme, providing three separate projects to allow you to define your areas of interest for your PhD studies. Each placement is a 12-week project and this will be with three different principal supervisors. You will be encouraged to choose placements beyond your undergraduate subject experience to
maximise your exposure to new techniques and science. Supervisors are drawn from a wide range of academic disciplines, such as medicine, biomedical and life sciences, mathematics, electronics and electrical engineering, and veterinary medicine.

Your initial application will be for Year 1 - MRes in TRANSLATIONAL MEDICINE.

Please note the BHF Entry requirements below to ensure you meet the criteria:

  • Awarded or expected 1st class or high upper 2nd class BSc degree. 

Applications for this course will be processed for the fully funded BHF 4 year PhD Studentship programme which awards an MRes after successful completion of the first year, and a PhD after successful completion of the programme.

While completing the online form you MUST also upload the below in the supporting documents section:
