Dr Catherine Bagot

  • Honorary Clinical Senior Lecturer (School of Cardiovascular & Metabolic Health)

Biography

Catherine Bagot graduated MBBS from St Mary’s Hospital Medical School, London in 1995, having also undertaken an Intercalated BSc in the History of Medicine at University College London (second class, upper division) awarded in 1992. After initially pursuing a career in Obstetrics and Gynaecology, she undertook an MD at Yale University Medical School in New Haven, USA, investigating the role of maternal HOXA10 expression in embryonic implantation. The MD was awarded by the University of London in 2002. On her return, she trained in general medicine obtaining MRCP in 2002 and then undertook specialist training in haematology in the South East London Deanery obtaining FRCPath in 2007. During her specialist training in haematology, she undertook a 2 year period of full time research investigating the effect of hormone replacement therapy on thrombin generation, a global assay of coagulation.
Dr Bagot has been a consultant haematologist at Glasgow Royal Infirmary since 2010. She specialises in haemostasis and thrombosis and is the co-lead for Haematology Obstetric services in North Glasgow. Her other clinical interests include autoimmune thrombocytopaenia (ITP) and prevention and treatment of venous thrombosis.
Dr Bagot has continued to pursue her academic interest of the applicability of thrombin generation to clinical thrombotic issues, particularly as it pertains to venous thrombosis risk prediction and poor pregnancy outcome. She was awarded an NRS Clinical Research Fellowship in 2012. In 2019 she obtained her first British Heart Foundation Research Award – a Clinical Research Fellowship to fund a senior haematology trainee to undertake an MD investigating the pathophysiology underlying the increased risk of venous thrombosis in overweight and obese pregnant women.
Dr Bagot is also a principal investigator in a number of national and international trials investigating new treatments for ITP and haemophilia.
