Dr Craig Smith
- Research Assistant (School of Cancer Sciences)
- Research Associate (Dental School)
Biography
Craig initially studied dentistry and graduated from the University of Glasgow with an intercalated BSc in Public Health (Clinical Medicine) in 2021. He subsequently undertook a Cancer Research UK-funded PhD in Cancer Science through the TRACC (Train and Retain Academic Cancer Clinicians) programme at the University of Glasgow’s Institute of Cancer Sciences, which he completed in 2024. His doctoral research focused on the epidemiology and risk prediction modelling of head and neck cancer, with particular emphasis on socioeconomic inequalities.
Craig is currently a medical student completing his MBChB at the University of Glasgow and was appointed as a part-time Postdoctoral Research Associate at the University of Glasgow, continuing his work in head and neck cancer epidemiology, survival outcomes, and health inequalities. Alongside his academic training, he has experience working as a Health Care Assistant and Vaccinator within NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde.
Craig has published widely on head and neck cancer incidence trends, sociodemographic patterns, and risk prediction modelling, including the development and external validation of a head and neck cancer risk prediction model. His work spans the cancer continuum — from population epidemiology and risk modelling to survival analysis and evaluation of health system impacts — with a strong focus on reducing inequalities and improving early detection.
He has received multiple national and institutional awards for research presentations, including the Ben Walton Lecture Award for raising awareness of mouth cancer, and has delivered presentations on head and neck cancer epidemiology in the UK and internationally. Craig remains actively involved in clinical academic event organisation and research leadership activities at the University of Glasgow.
Craig still maintains close links with his dental colleagues, working with the Community Oral Health and Oral Medicine departments based in Glasgow Dental Hospital. He also works with the multidisciplinary Glasgow Head and Neck Cancer Research Group GLAHNC to conduct head and neck cancer research across various projects.
Research interests
Craig’s research interests span socioeconomic inequalities in health, cancers, anaesthetics and pain management, epidemiology, risk prediction, health policy, and health improvement.
His work focuses particularly on socioeconomic inequalities, head and neck cancers, risk prediction modelling, and health systems. Craig’s research covers the full head and neck cancer continuum — from investigating disease epidemiology and identifying risk factors, to evaluating early detection and prevention interventions. He has also examined study participation, clinical outcomes, and survival, with a strong emphasis on improving equity and effectiveness within health systems.
