Research interests

My research focuses on reproductive biology, with a particular interest in the factors that drive fertility and fecundity. I am currently focused on developing markers of reproductive history, as well as assessing the reproductive potential of species for which we do not automatically have information on their life history - such as marine mammals and other species that are difficult to monitor in the wild. In particular, I use detailed observations of ovarian tissue to generate insights into reproductive function, fertility, and fecundity, contributing to broader knowledge of population dynamics and health. Taking a comparative approach, we are drawing on diverse animal systems to explore and contrast reproductive anatomy and physiology.

More broadly, I am interested in maximising the information that can be gained from individual specimens to inform population-level assessments of status and health. This interest stems from my background in marine mammal science, where insights are often derived from stranded animals; a constraint that for me has highlighted the value of extracting detailed, multi-layered data from limited and opportunistic samples and the potential of using comparative frameworks and statistical methods to integrate such data and generate robust inferences that improve understanding across systems.
