Jayne graduated from Glasgow University Veterinary School in 2005. She has spent the last 8 years working in private practice as a farm animal vet in Cumbria, Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire. In 2007 she spent a 6 month sabbatical in New Zealand working in a dairy practice on the South Island. In April 2013 she returned to the Veterinary School to take up a position as teaching university clinician.
