The Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging (SCMI) was opened on 11th September 2018 by Dr Richard Henderson.

Guests from around the world were welcomed to the official opening of the Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging (SCMI) on 11th September 2018 in the Mary Stewart Building, Garscube campus, University of Glasgow.
Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor; Professor Richard Cogdell, Deputy Head of the College of Medical, Veterinary and Life Sciences and Professor Richard Henderson, 2017 Nobel Prize winner for Chemistry, opened the new national centre for structural biology research, which provides access to cutting-edge instrumentation for cryogenic electron microscopy.
SCMI is a consortium of partner institutions, including the Beatson Institute for Cancer Research, the University of Dundee, the University of Edinburgh, the University of Glasgow, and the University of St Andrews.
Dr David Bhella, Programme Leader, MRC-University of Glasgow Centre for Virus Research (CVR) and Director of SCMI, commented: “The Scottish Centre for Macromolecular Imaging is a tremendous opportunity not only for the CVR but also for life sciences in Scotland. Our new facility will place the CVR and the University of Glasgow right at the centre of vital structural biology research by offering a world-class capability. The new technology will help us investigate key processes in infection and cancer biology”.
