Biography

Karen graduated from the University of Glasgow in 2009 with an MA (Hons) in Public Policy. She worked at the MRC/CSO Social and Public Health Sciences Unit from 2010 based in the Survey Office on several studies, including recruitment and administration for the Football Fans In Training (FFIT) programme. In 2011, she joined the Understandings and Uses of Public Health Research programme. Her work focussed on newsprint media representations of the Scottish Government's Minimum Unit Pricing of alcohol policy and second-hand smoking and children.

Since 2013, Karen has worked at General Practice and Primary Care on a range of research studies including qualitative interview/focus group studies, systematic reviews and randomised controlled trials. Her research has focused on several areas such as the management of long term conditions amongst adults with learning disabilities and mindfulness interventions for people with diabetes, epilepsy, Parkinson's Disease and MS. She also worked with the Scottish School of Primary Care on their evaluation of primary care transformation in Scotland. From 2014, Karen worked on the EU FP7  InMINDD (Innovative, Midlife Intervention for Dementia Deterrence) randomised controlled trial, completing recruitment and data collection in Scotland and contributing to the process evaluation. Most recently, she has been involved in the EU Horizon 2020 funded project 'selfBACK', which aims to develop and trial a smartphone application for the self-management of low back pain.
