Our work in Africa on this theme is focussed on pathogens that negatively affect human and animal health We use molecular techniques, epidemiological data, clinical partnerships, modelling, and a variety of disease surveillance networks to understand disease transmission dynamics. Our African portfolio on Ageing, Health and Welfare is targeted at providing the best possible data to policy makers, medical and veterinary practitioners, and communities about how to minimize the impact of disease.

Discovering biomarkers for breeding strategies to improve livestock production and fitness

Our collaborative research projects has brought together endocrine expertise from the University of Glasgow with animal scientists within the Western Cape Department of Agriculture (South African Government) to identify potential biomarkers for use in breeding strategies to improve animal production and welfare (sheep and ostrich industries), as well as understanding the genetic mechanisms that are involved in the interplay between the stress and reproductive endocrine axes.

Trying to see the whole picture: Social, Economic and Environmental Drivers of Zoonoses

Now the University of Glasgow is leading a team of partners to understand what is driving zoonotic disease transmission between livestock and people, and how we can minimize risk.

This research investigates bacterial foodborne diseases in northern Tanzania. Using social and biological science, the team will identify the riskiest steps in the journey of meat from the farm to the plate, and combine this with knowledge of food safety policy to make recommendations to improve food safety in developing nations.

The first major push to understand the nature of non-malarial fever-causing illnesses in Tanzania, and the factors that influence human risk of infection. BacZoo focused on leptospirosis, Q-Fever and brucellosis and took the first steps to mapping the disease transmission dynamics of these less-studied tropical diseases.
