Waterloo to Desert Storm: New Thinking on International Conflict, 1815-1991
CALL FOR PAPERS
Conference for Postgraduates and Early-Career Historians
Thursday 24th & Friday 25th June 2010
Conflicts continue to play a significant role in international affairs and the study of their history offers unique insight into the problems facing the contemporary world. This conference provides an opportunity for postgraduates/early-career academics undertaking research into the history of conflict, to present their work to a wider audience, thus highlighting the range of innovative studies currently in progress across the UK. We invite proposals for papers on the following broadly defined themes, but we would welcome any related suggestions:
- The origins of wars and conflicts
- Planning and preparation for war (e.g. reform of armed forces, changes in military technology, financing war)
- Tactics, strategy, battles and campaigns
- Insurgencies, guerrilla warfare, and civil war
- Political and military leadership
- Individual experience, perceptions of warfare, and home fronts
- Peace negotiations and conferences, war crimes and international justice
The conference will include a workshop session on using archives to research the history of conflict and a keynote lecture by Professor Hew Strachan, Chichele Professor of the History of War, University of Oxford.
Proposals (c.300 words) for papers of 20 minutes should be submitted to Ms Ulrike Thieme by Thursday 15th April 2010. There are no registration costs, and accommodation can be arranged by the organisers. There may be limited funds available to refund travel costs, but delegates are encouraged to apply to their host institutions for assistance. We welcome contact from anyone who wishes to attend the conference.
