What do schools need to know about retrieval practice?

Learning can be undermined when educators don't take account of the rapid forgetting that all students experience. Retrieval practice is a flexible, practical and evidence-based way that can support lasting learning and tackle forgetting, helping students to build permanent knowledge which they can apply in new settings. This session will explain how retrieval practice can be built into any class or course. We will look at how its role goes well beyond quizzes, and should not be conflated with formative questioning. The session will demystify the theory underlying retrieval practice, helping participants to hone their professional understanding of the technique and supporting implementation in departments and schools.
