Drawing from papers written for a special issue of the International journal of Human Rights, this seminar considers how Scotland is realizing human rights. The special issue asks the question whether a sound evidence-gathering process can shed light on some of the challenges in translating international standards into national realities.

The three main themes addressed are:

•       the framing of emerging individual issues and long-standing societal challenges in human rights language;

•       methods of measuring effectiveness of national legislation and policy against international standards;

•       and the impact of National Human Rights Institutions (NHRIs) on the human rights landscape, on the realization of rights and the fluency with which rights are discussed.

 

This first seminar in the series features the following speakers:

•       Power, Privilege and Justice - Intersectionality and Human Rights

Colin Clark, Vicki Burns and Dee Matthew

•       Identifying routes to remedy for violations of economic, social and cultural rights

Katie Boyle and Edel Hughes
