Prestigious international award for academic

Richard Berry - senior lecturer and Director of the Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies - has been awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic.

The Department of Central and East European Studies is delighted to announce that Richard Berry - senior lecturer and Director of the Centre for Russian, Central and East European Studies - has been awarded the Officer's Cross of the Order of Merit of the Hungarian Republic.

At a ceremony in December at the Hungarian Cultural Centre in London the Minister for International Relations of the Ministry of Culture - Katalin Bogyay praised Richard's "outstanding contribution to the promotion of Hungarian language, culture and society".

Richard was co-organiser of the highly successful Magyar Magic festival in 2004, which followed on from the Hungary: Heart of Europe festival in 2002. He has just established the Hungarian Studies Association of the UK, which will hold its first meeting in Glasgow on 15 March.

Also honoured was Professor George Kolankiewicz, CEELBAS Managing Director and Chair of Sociology of Central Europe, University College London.
