Samuel Skipsey & Jeremy Singer on Students Physics transitioning to C
Published: 16 March 2025
Jeremy Singer is a Reader in Computing Science and Samuel Skipsey is a Research Fellow in Physics. They have been considering students in Physics transferring from high level languages (like Python) to low level languages (like C).
TITLE: Student Transfer from High-Level to Low-Level Programming
SPEAKERS: Samuel Skipsey & Jeremy Singer
DATE: 3rd April 2025
TIME: 15:00-16:00
DESCRIPTION:
Considering Physics 2T: “Programming under Linux” as a case study, we explore how learners progress from a high-level language (i.e. Python) and a high-level development environment (i.e. Jupyter) to a low-level language (i.e. C) and a low-level environment (i.e. Linux command line). We discuss common misconceptions and difficulties, commenting on the differences between Physics and Computing Science students. We consider how an alternative second language (e.g. Julia) might be more appropriate.
