Short Description

Students work in small groups on a research proposal, presenting and writing documentation (covering literature, rationale, hypothesis, experimental design, methods, outcome measures, impact statement, dissemination plan, cost and staffing) to answer a specific research question.

Timetable

The course will be delivered with sessions at the end of semester one and beginning of semester two.

Reflective Statement - 1 page (ILOs 4 & 5)

Peer Evaluation (ILOs 2 & 5)

Group proposal - 6 - 15 pages on a proforma (ILOs 1,2,3 & 5)

Peer review cannot be re-assessed.

 

For students on MSc Human Nutrition with specialisation:

Students who do not achieve a C3 or above on first sitting have one opportunity to re-sit any or all assessment components except for the peer review. Students who fail to meet the minimum D3 threshold of a component, even if the overall C3 has been achieved, will have one opportunity to re-sit that component to meet the requirements of accreditation except for the peer review.

 

 

For students on MSc Human Nutrition with Knowledge Transfer:

Students who do not achieve a C3 or above on first sitting have one opportunity to re-sit any or all assessment components except for the peer review.

Course Aims

This course aims to allow students to acquire skills in developing a research idea and hypothesis and consider all aspects of a research proposal.

Intended Learning Outcomes of Course

By the end of this course students will be able to:

1. Identify gaps in the published evidence, through critical review and develop relevant research proposals.

2. Critically evaluate experimental designs and methodology and be able to select those appropriate for a research question.

3. Critically discuss the ethical issues relating to a research proposal

4. Critically reflect on which AfN core competencies and standards have been met by this piece of work.

5. Work effectively in teams and project manage to complete complex tasks and critically reflect on the strengths and weaknesses of both their peers and themselves within that team team.

Minimum Requirement for Award of Credits

For students on MSc Human Nutrition with specialisation:

As per the Association for Nutrition accreditation requirements students must submit all assessment components and achieve a minimum grade of D3 in each component.

 

For students on MSc Human Nutrition with Knowledge Transfer:

Students must submit at least 75% by weight of the components (including examinations) of the course's summative assessment.
