Hi, I’m Kayleigh Devine, a PhD student jointly based at the University of Glasgow and Moredun Research Institute. I graduated with a BSc (Hons) in Veterinary Biosciences from the University of Glasgow in 2024, where I discovered my passion for parasitology. During my undergraduate degree, I undertook a summer research project investigating anthelmintic resistance in dairy cattle. I enjoyed the topic so much that I chose to explore it further in my honours project, this time focusing on anthelmintic resistance in organic beef cattle. These projects helped me to realise how valuable knowledge exchange was with farmers which I hope to take into this PhD project. Outside of the lab, I enjoy spending my time showing cattle, riding horses, and cooking.
My PhD project aims to investigate the impact that regenerative pasture management and grazing strategies have on livestock productivity, parasite control and pasture composition. The project includes a field trial at the Firth Mains Farm (Moredun Research Institute), comparing, rotational grazing and set-stock grazing practices. I’ll then compare the outcomes from this trial to data collected during a commercial farm study which I will be carrying out in my third year, to assess both the benefits and potential downsides of regenerative practices in Scotland.
