Aniol Pugidefabregas Nogueras

My name is Aniol Puigdefabregas Nogueras and I am studying my PhD at the Department of Biomedical Engineering at the University of Strathclyde with my secondary institution being Lancaster University. I am originally from Barcelona, and I moved to Glasgow to study a bachelor's degree in Naval Architecture. I then changed the direction of my career by obtaining my MSc in Biomedical Engineering, where I applied my fluid dynamics expertise to biological systems.

I started my PhD in membrane separation technology in October 2023 as part of the NorthWestBio DTP. My research focus is to develop a comprehensive understanding of mass transfer and concentration polarisation effects by using Computational Fluid Dynamics. Concentration polarisation is a phenomenon whereby the rejected solute accumulated at the membrane surface reduces separation efficiency.  My work will shed new light in the development and management of this phenomenon for better understanding and optimisation of nanofiltration processes such as water treatment, biopharmaceutical and biorefinery applications.
