Research title: A Cultural and Natural History of Scotland's Peatlands

Research Summary

My research examines the archaeological and palaeoenvironmental history of Scottish peatlands under the care of the National Trust for Scotland. This is done by using a tripartite methodology based in Assemblage Theory, examining the perceptions of and activities associated with peatlands, evidenced through material evidence for depositional and extractive behaviour, intangible heritage such as social history and folklore, and the impact of such actions on the peatlands themselves, drawn from paleoenvironmental proxy records. Through the study of Coleoptera sub-fossils, I intend to use a novel more-than-human approach to constructing narratives of past upland land environments, weaving together people, places, plants and animals to demonstrate the importance of these wetlands to a vast array of actors both in the past and the current anthropogenic climate and biodiversity crises.
