Research title: The communication and practice of youth subculture in Tu Wei video and the exploration of youth identity construction

Currently based at the Centre for Cultural Policy Research, University of Glasgow, where he is undertaking a PhD, Haowei Xu (MFA, BFA) has an academic background in Broadcasting, Hosting, and Media Communication, with professional experience in education and extensive training in both the theory and practice of oral performance.

Prior to his doctoral study, Haowei engaged in research on television presenters and dialect-based programmes in Chinese media, focusing on their role in regional identity expression and the cultural significance of vernacular communication. He has also been involved in a range of teaching and research activities related to Chinese oral communication, broadcasting, and film and television studiesAs a teaching assistant, he contributed to the undergraduate course Audio-Visual Movies, which was recognised as a National First-Class Undergraduate Course in China.

His current PhD research explores the communication and practice of youth subculture in China’s “Tuwei” video scene, examining how young people perform, negotiate, and construct identity through digital media practices. The project situates these dynamics within broader discussions of popular culture, media representation, and cultural policy.

Beyond his academic work, Haowei maintains a strong interest in oral communication, popular culture, and contemporary Chinese media and cultural policy. His research takes an interdisciplinary approach to culture and communication.
