My research interest is predominantly focused on twentieth-century prose fiction often with a connection to the Scottish Highlands.

In making the case for Eric Linklater (1899-1974) being a major twentieth-century Scottish author, the topic of my thesis is how his writing engages perceptively with the Second World War and the altered postwar landscape that was its legacy. His work charts a changing British national identity and place in the world as survival of WWII was followed by the creation of the welfare state, the Cold War, and the end of the Empire. Linklater’s characteristic wit and literary craftsmanship allows him to tackle such weighty issues in an amusing and readable manner. The thesis is hoped to be similarly accessible to provide greater critical understanding and recognition for Linklater as well as to increase public awareness of the riches to be found in his writing.
