The Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Cirrus Logic and the University of Glasgow have announced an innovative new placement for a fifth-year student on the University of Glasgow’s Master of Engineering course in Electronics with Music.
The Royal Scottish National Orchestra (RSNO), Cirrus Logic and the University of Glasgow have today announced an innovative new placement for a fifth-year student on the University of Glasgow’s Master of Engineering (MEng) course in Electronics with Music.
Joining Cirrus Logic’s 2026 cohort of engineering interns, the University of Glasgow’s Electronics with Music student, Michael Cahir, has been selected to take part in the first year of this exciting new internship opportunity.

Spending time at Cirrus Logic's UK office in Edinburgh, the selected student will work alongside some of the industry’s best engineers. The internship will provide professional experience designing technology aimed at improving the listening experience in professional audio, later applying their work to the RSNO’s state-of-the-art recording facility, Scotland’s Studio.
This is a unique opportunity for students to assist the RSNO’s in-house audio team on recordings of Scotland’s National Orchestra for film, television, and classical release, while benefitting from the knowledge and expertise of Cirrus Logic’s best-in-class engineers.
The development of this placement is the latest collaboration between the RSNO and Cirrus Logic, a leading provider of high-performance audio and mixed-signal semiconductor solutions. Having sponsored the RSNO since 2023, Cirrus Logic also annually supports an RSNO Season concert and extends invitations to their employees to experience Scotland’s National Orchestra for themselves.
Cirrus Logic’s industry-leading technology is used in Scotland’s Studio’s newly renovated control room at the RSNO Centre, Glasgow, with the Orchestra recently recording soundtracks for clients including Sony Pictures, Universal, Netflix, Apple TV and Paramount at the facility.
The University of Glasgow’s Electronics with Music degree programme, which has been attracting students to Glasgow for more than 30 years, provides a valuable and unusual combination of skills in both engineering and musical performance.
Graduates from the programme have found employment with Cirrus Logic, as well as Jaguar Land Rover, Texas Instruments, Burr Brown, Linn, BBC and major TV and music production companies.
Education opportunities remain at the heart of the RSNO’s recording work, with projects including the Film Composers Lab and a year-long Trainee Audio Engineer post. This new placement with the University of Glasgow will provide an engaging platform for students to explore the practical application of the latest audio technology within the world of classical music.
RSNO Chief Executive Alistair Mackie said: “We are excited to welcome Michael to the RSNO and are hugely grateful to our corporate partners Cirrus Logic for this opportunity for further collaboration.
“This placement is indicative of our three organisations’ shared values as we support the next generation of talent in Scotland while ensuring that we’re at the forefront of dynamic business development. It is our duty as a National Performing Company to find ways to bring classical music to a wider audience, and to be able to use RSNO facilities to test audio engineering projects on our orchestral work is brilliant.”
Denise Grode, Cirrus Logic Executive Vice President and Chief Human Resources Officer said: “At Cirrus Logic, we believe that advancing STEM education and supporting the arts go hand in hand in inspiring the next generation of innovators. This new internship with the RSNO and the University of Glasgow gives students real-world engineering experience. It is an opportunity where education, arts and technology intersect creating a unique opportunity to learn and apply knowledge that ultimately impacts the listener’s experience.”
Dr Bernd Porr of the University of Glasgow’s James Watt School of Engineering said: “Our Electronics with Music course helps students develop the skills to work in professional music production and assess high-end audio equipment with the unique technical and artistic insight of a musical performer. We’re pleased to be continuing our partnership with Cirrus Logic and the RSNO with this placement, which will provide invaluable experience for Michael.”
