The University of Glasgow has maintained an overall ranking of 12th in the world in the 2025 Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, out of 2,318 universities.

The result means the University of Glasgow ranks top in Scotland, second in the UK and third in Europe. The THE Impact Rankings benchmark performance of universities against the 17 UN Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).

The THE Impact Rankings measure impact across a broad range of sustainable development criteria. They consider universities’ commitment to addressing the world's most pressing challenges, including environmental sustainability, social inclusion, economic growth, and partnerships.

The result of 12th globally equals the University’s performance in the 2024 rankings. The number of universities included in the 2025 results increased by 18% from 1,963 in 2024.

The University of Glasgow is ranked in the world’s top 50 in 11 SDGs (up from nine in 2024), and in the world top 10 for three SDGs (up from two in 2024).

The University ranks:

  • Third globally in SDG 6, Clean Water and Sanitation
  • 10th globally in SDG 12, Responsible Consumption and Production
  • 10th globally in SDG 15, Life on Land

Professor Sir Anton Muscatelli, Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University of Glasgow, said: “It is fantastic to see the University of Glasgow once again recognised as a global leader in sustainable development by the Times Higher Education Impact Rankings, a result that is even more impressive given the increasing number of institutions around the world taking part.

“This result reflects our commitment and leadership in delivering real-world solutions to the most pressing challenges facing society today. I’d like to thank our community – colleagues, students and partners – for their hard work and dedication in realising these values.”
