In what is thought to have been the biggest event of its kind, students at the University of Glasgow have voted ‘No’ in a campus wide referendum, asking: “Should Scotland be an independent country.”

The final results stood at:

1,614 - No

967 - Yes

8 - Spoiled

More than 2,500 students took part in the referendum which was supported by a broad coalition of student societies including the SNP, Labour, Conservative and Independent politics groups.

Michael Gray, President of the University of Glasgow Dialectic Society, who was the lead organiser, said, “This was a fascinating and fantastic way to engage all of our students on campus. In addition to the referendum itself we held several debates which attracted high profile speakers from both sides of the argument.

“The University of Glasgow student referendum was also well covered by national and international media. Whether our result points the way ahead for Scotland’s vote in 2014 remains to be seen – but we can only hope that the level of debate and engagement seen at the University of Glasgow over the past few weeks will be repeated as the nation prepares for the biggest decision in Scotland’s political history.”
