The University has offered its deepest sympathy and practical support to all its Japanese students and staff who have been affected by the devastation and terrible loss of life in the events following the earthquake in Japan.

Professor Graham Caie, Clerk of Senate and Vice Principal said: "We understand that this will be an extremely worrying time, and that many of you will have serious concerns about your families and friends back home.  Students may also have concerns about the ongoing viability of your sponsorship arrangements. The International Student Support Team in the Fraser Building can provide advice on many matters such as financial support, urgent travel arrangements, visa advice and extensions, and counseling support for students. If you require extended deadlines for submission of academic work, or time off to deal with urgent issues, please speak to a member of staff in your School or Subject Area."

Students can contact the International Student Support Team  via the Student Service Enquiry Desk on Level 2 of the Fraser Building, or alternatively can email International Student Support directly on internationalstudentsupport@admin.gla.ac.uk.

The University is also sending letters of support to the Japanese universities with which Glasgow has a Memorandum of Understanding and a special one to the universities in the afflicted area offering, for example, research students access to facilities and equipment if their infrastructure is damaged.

Anyone wishing to donate to the disaster fund can do so at the British Red Cross website which will direct the donation to the Japanese Red Cross at http://www.redcross.org.uk/Donate-Now
