Third year law student Clare McKinlay is currently on a three week placement in the Scottish Parliament that she won in an essay competition.

Claire wrote the winning entry to a competition run by the Law Society of Scotland and the Scottish Parliament to mark two important anniversaries – the 60th anniversary of the Law Society and the 10th anniversary of the Scottish Parliament. Her essay entitled: ‘How can lawyers in Scotland contribute to the continued success of the work of the Scottish Parliament?’ successfully outlined how the input of Scotland’s 10,000 solicitors and lawyers are important to the Parliament’s continued success. Clare McKinlay (21) said: “I was thrilled to win the competition, and I am really enjoying my placement and the opportunity to get an insight into the work of the solicitors at the Parliament. Public law is the subject I have enjoyed most in my studies so far, and both the placement, and the actual process of writing the essay have given me a chance to explore this further.”

In addition to her placement in the Parliament’s legal department, Clare saw her essay published in the Law Society of Scotland members’ magazine The Journal and received a cash prize of £500.
