Professor Colin Espie, Director of the Glasgow Sleep Centre, appeared in a BBC One documentary on Tuseday May 12.

The professor is seen advising broadcaster and journalist Dominik Diamond on how to overcome insomnia using a technique called Sleep Restriction Therapy at the Sackler Institute of Psychobiological Research at the Southern General Hospital.

In the programme, Dominik talks openly about his struggle with insomnia and his reliance on music, television and sleeping pills in order to get a night’s rest, blaming his stressful broadcasting schedule for his problems.

Prof Espie provides him with strategies to overcome insomnia, including removing all electrical equipment from his bedroom, keeping a sleep diary and only going to bed when tired.

'10 Things You Need to Know About Sleep' was shown on BBC One on Tuesday May 12 at 9pm.
