Funeral service - Sir Charles Wilson

Published: 12 November 2002

It is with extreme regret that the University of Glasgow has learned of the death of a former Principal, Sir Charles Haynes Wilson, on Saturday 9 November 2002.

Sir Charles Wilson MA LLD Dlitt DCL held the post of Principal and Vice-Chancellor of the University from 1961 to 1976, and oversaw the largest expansion the university had seen to that date. Sir Charles was himself a Glasgow graduate, having gained the degree of MA in 1928.

The current Principal, Professor Sir Graeme Davies, said ' Sir Charles Wilson guided this University through a period of rapid change in the history of higher education. His tenure, covering as it did the Robbins Committee report in 1963 and a further Universities (Scotland) Act in 1966, marked a large-scale expansion of staff and student numbers. The University's first two Vice-Principals were appointed during this time.

Sir Charles Wilson contributed much to shaping the institution that is the University of Glasgow today. He will be sadly missed by those who had the privilege to serve with him'

A funeral service was held at St Margaret's Church, New Galloway, on Thursday, 14 November at 1.30pm
