1500 students, staff and alumni took part in the torchlit procession celebrating the University's 550th anniversary.

1500 students, staff and alumni of the University took part in the torchlight procession through the city centre on Friday to mark the 550th anniversary of the founding of the University.

On a crisp clear night the Chancellor and the Principal, led by pipers, headed the procession which walked from the Cathedral, where the University first started, via George Square to the present site on Gilmorehill.

All ages were represented, including some who had walked in the 1951 torchlight event celebrating the 500th anniversary as well as the children of present staff and students. The procession included a brass band and many of the participants were in fancy dress.

Professor Malcolm McLeod, Vice-Principal for External Relations, said: "This has been a tremendous evening and has been enthusiastically supported by all the University community. I am sure this will be a memorable occasion for everyone who took part. All credit is due to the organisers and others including the police and the city council who did so much to help."
