Getting a Big Buddy
Are you a new undergraduate international student starting at the University of Glasgow in September 2025? Apply to have a Big Buddy- an experienced student to help you settle in and navigate life at university in the UK. GIC students who are starting at UofG in September 2026 in year one or two are also welcome to apply to get a Big Buddy.
How it works:
Applications to get a big Buddy for the 2026/27 session will open closer to Septermber 2026.
Your Big Buddy will be your contact before and during Autumn Semester, offering support and guidance as you adjust to university life.
Big Buddies are trained to answer your questions, guide you to university services, and share their favourite spots in Glasgow. They volunteer their time to help you and offer personal insights to make your transition easier.
When can I apply?
Applications to get a Big Buddy for 2026 will open towards the start of the academic year
Who are the Big Buddies?
Big Buddies are current University of Glasgow students who have been here at least one year. They volunteer their time and undergo training to support you effectively.
When will I know who my Big Buddy is?
If you apply for a Big Buddy by the deadline, then you will be notified of who your Big Buddy is before the start of Autumn semester.
If you apply after the deadline, we will match you with a Big Buddy and notify you of the match as soon as we can after you apply.
How long will I have my Big Buddy?
The Buddying Scheme runs from September to December (Autumn Semester / Semester 1).
How will we communicate?
You’ll mostly communicate via email and in-person meetings, but you can message/text or connect on social media if you are both comfortable.
How often will we meet?
Your Big Buddy will reach out to you weekly, but communication can be more or less frequent depending on schedules.
How many times will we meet in person?
You’re encouraged to meet at least once in person. More meetings are welcome. We’ll also organise social events where you can meet your Big Buddy and others.
Will my Big Buddy have other Wee Buddies?
Yes, your Big Buddy may be paired with more than one Wee Buddy. They may suggest group meetups, but one on one meetings are also an option.
Is there a fee?
No, it's completely free to participate.
