21st May 2022 -Women's Enterprise Event - University of Glasgow

Join our colleagues from the University IP and Commercialisation team for an afternoon hearing about the experiences of women who founded companies based on their own academic research. 14th June 2022, 2-5pm, at The Mazumdar-Shaw Advanced Research Centre, University of Glasgow.
 

11th May 2022 - Nebuflow Secure Major Funding Investment

We are delighted to hear that University of Glasgow spin-out company Nebuflow, whom we have supported withseveral rounds of EPSRC IAA funding, have secure £1.7m of investment funding which will enable further development and commercialisation of their nebulisation medical device technology.

9th May 2022 - EPSRC IAA Festival of Impact 2022

The 2022 edition of the EPSRC IAA Impact Festival took place on 22nd March 2022 in Glasgow. Organised by the five Scottish Universities holding EPSRC Impact Acceleration Accounts (Edinburgh, Glasgow, Heriot-Watt, Strathclyde & St Andrews), it brought together researchers from all of these institutions for a fascinating day of discussion and discovery.

University of Glasgow spin out company Nebuflow and their nebulser platform technology which has been supported by the IAA is featured as a case study in the recently published UKRI Strategy 2022-2027.See Objective #3 to read the Nebuflow case study

 We are pleased to announce the first call from our new 2022-2025 EPSRC IAA. This is a standard proposal call with a deadline on Tuesday 26th April 2022 at 10am.

3rd February 2022 - BEIS Energy Policy Sessions

We have been asked by EPSRC to promote a forthcoming series energy policy briefings from UK Government officials on the latest energy policy priorities, exclusively designed for UK academics. The concept is to provide more detail to the academics on current priorities and to facilitate better engagement with policymakers. The events are being hosted by the Open Innovation Team with input from both UKRI and BEIS. 20th January 2022 - Cross-College Commercialisation Training Workshops – Register now for Feb and March

The Colleges of Science and Engineering and Medical, Veterinary and Life Sceinces have secured a limited number of fully funded places on the We are Pioneer Group (WAPG) Commercialisation Workshops for 2022, led by WAPG coaches, mentors, and investment team. We are working in partnership with WAPG to deliver two sets of commercialisation training workshops aimed at anyone working in healthcare or life sciences with an interest in entrepreneurship. These workshops are suitable for anyone wishing to learn more about commercialisation and will cover best practice tools and techniques that will enable participants to explore a health or life science start-up idea or product commercialisation. The following workshops are available:

  1. Introduction to Lean Start-Up, Customer Discovery and how to Create a Compelling Value Proposition - February 8th at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
  2. Business Model Innovation - February 22nd at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm
  3. How to Communicate a Business Proposition to Investors/Funders - March 1st at 10:00 am - 12:00 pm

The sessions will be open to all staff and will run across February and March as well as in Q3/4 2022 (dates TBC). More information can be found in this WAPG Workshop Overview document.

A limited number of places are available on a first come, first served basis. It is advised that you attend all 3 workshops to gain the most from the course. However, there will be a chance to attend missed workshops in the second, round later in 2022. If attending across the year, it is advised that researchers should attend both workshops 1 and 2 before attending workshop 3.

17th January 2022 - Responsible Innovation in Practice Training

The second in our current series of online masterclasses on Responsible Innovation in Practice, led by Couto Phoenix Consulting will take place on 27th January from 11am to 1pm

Many of you have already attended a previous workshop where you were given an introduction into RI and why it is important for impact. In part two, RI in practice will be further developed at a more detailed and personalised level, and will include tools for  in-depth stake holder analysis and engagement strategies

 Note that attendance at workshop 1 is NOT a pre-requisite for this workshop, so long as you have a working knowledge of the EPSRC RI AREA Framework.

New IAA Proposal Submission deadline

The next IAA standard proposal submission deadline is Tuesday 25th January 2022 at 10am. Please note the following additional criteria for this call:

  • Projects are expected to commence promptly once awarded and must be complete by 30th June 2022.
  • IAA Funds available via this call are limited. We will only be able to fund a small number of projects - please take this in consideration when making your application.
  • Please consider carefully the resources that you include in your project budget for applications to this call. Ideally the resources requested should be non-staff items such as consumables, travel and equipment*. If you wish to appoint a person to undertake some of the work, you should ideally have someone in mind and check that they will be available within the stated timeframe AND you will need to ensure that comply with University recruitment policies. There is unlikely to be the time available to undertake the full recruitment process for projects funded by this call.
  • Research Associates, Research Fellows as well as all other staff are welcome to apply to this call.
  • This call has been enabled by an additional funding allocation awarded to the University by EPSRC. These funds are expected to be used in line with existing IAA priorities to address challenges and opportunities, including those that have arisen as a result of COVID-19 and where demand is surplus to funding available. The following four areas are particular priorities for this additional funding:
    1. Working with and through the Alan Turing Institute, the Rosalind Franklin Institute, the Henry Royce Institute and their network of user partnerships.
    2. Support for activities which encourage business co-investment and enhance business/academic partnerships.
    3. Impact activities which contribute to regional/place agendas.
    4. Public Engagement where interaction is key to informing the research impact such as user or patient engagement as a critical pathway to achieving societal and/or economic impact.

Applications should be submitted no later than 10am on the deadline day and should be submitted by email to Keith Dingwall.

*Note - the value of any equipment purchased must be less than £10,000.

We are pleased to announce a further two online Masterclasses on Responsible Innovation in Practice, led by Couto Phoenix Consulting. These will compliment our new responsible innovation webpage which is packed full of useful resources which have been designed to inform projects at all stages in their lifecycle .  The first workshop, ‘An Introduction to Putting Responsible Innovation into Practice’ will take place on Thursday 18th of November 11AM – 1PM

  • Learn what responsible innovation (RI) is, why it is important and where it applies along the research to innovation continuum. 
  • Learn how to start embedding RI into your research via the AREA framework.
  • Learn to distinguish between RI and other public engagement/science communication activities

The second workshop will take place towards end of January 2022 (TBA), and will follow on from the first workshop with greater depth: ‘Responsible Innovation in Practice – Developing Your Engagement Strategy’  

  • Understanding stakeholders is key to embedding RI into your research.  
  • Work with your fellow participants to conduct an in-depth analysis of project stakeholders.
  • Develop an awareness of their interests, how they align with the approach you are taking to solve your research question   and identify whether they can influence your work.

New "Short Turn-Around" standard IAA proposal submission deadline announced.

The next Standard IAA submission deadline is Tuesday 2nd November at 10am. Please note that the following extra criteria apply to this call (in addition to our ):

  • This is a short-turn around call. Projects are expected to commence promptly once awarded (i.e. before the end of 2021), and must be complete by 31st March 2022.
  • IAA Funds available via this call are very limited. We may only fund one larger project or 2 or 3 smaller scale projects. Please take this in consideration when making your application.
  • Please consider carefully the resources that you include in your project budget for applications to this call. Ideally the resources requested should be non-staff items such as consumables, travel and equipment. If you wish to appoint a person to undertake some of the work, you should ideally have someone in mind and check that they will be available within the stated timeframe AND you will need to ensure that comply with University recruitment policies. There is unlikely to be the time available to undertake the full recruitment process for projects funded by this call.

20th September 2021 - IAA supported POST fellowship results in new POSTNote on Defence of space-based assets

UofG PhD Student Lucy Smyth from the School of Chemistry worked on this new publicartion from the UK Parliamentary Office of Science and Technology as part of her POST fellowship.
