How to Apply
Make sure you have read through and familiarised yourself with the application process. The application process for a foreign school is different to that of domestic schools in the US.
We ask that you get in touch with us at usloans@glasgow.ac.uk once you have submitted your FAFSA as these are not automatically sent to us.
The University of Glasgow School Code is G08383.
See below the steps for applying for loans with us.
Application Process
+++
Step 1. Complete a FAFSA for the academic year
Students are required to submit a FAFSA application annually. You can submit a FAFSA on the studentaid website - Federal Student Aid. FAFSAs can be submitted from October prior to the academic year.
The University of Glasgow School Code is G08383.
After you have completed a FAFSA, a Student Aid Report (SAR) will be produced for your review, and the US Loans Team will use the produced Institutional Student Information Record (SIR) to establish eligibility.
Please note, that once you have submitted a FAFSA you should get in contact with the US Loans team at usloans@glasgow.ac.uk. Please inform that you have submitted and include your name, course, and GUID (if known).

Step 2. Complete Entrance Counselling (For new borrowers, or students starting a new programme)
If you are a new borrower, or a continuing/previous borrower that is starting a new course, then the US Department of Education requires you to complete entrance counselling. This must be completed before your loan can be built or originated.
You can complete entrance counselling here - Entrance Counseling | Federal Student Aid.
---
+++
Step 3. Complete a Master Promissory Note
Students using federal loans at our university are required to submit one master promissory note (MPN) per loan each year. The MPN is a legal document in which you promise to repay your loan(s) and any accrued interest and fees to the U.S. Department of Education. It also explains the terms and conditions of your loan(s).
You can complete an MPN, or find out more information on them, on the studentaid website - Completing a Master Promissory Note | Federal Student Aid.

Step 4. Submit a PLUS Loan Application (Optional)
If wish to use either a Grad PLUS or Parent PLUS loan, then you or your parent, respectively, will need to submit a PLUS application on studentaid. This type of loan requires a credit check.
You can find out more info or apply for a PLUS loan here - PLUS Loan Application | Federal Student Aid.

Step 5. US Loan Student Eligibility Award Letter
If you have completed the relevant actions from Steps 1-4 then the next step is to await your eligibility award letter from our US Loans team. Please note, as mentioned in Step 1, our US Loans team is not automatically made aware of your FAFSA submission and so it is required that you get in touch to confirm your application - you can get in touch as usloans@glasgow@ac.uk.
For FAFSAs submitted from October, we will be in touch with an eligibility award letter the following summer time, before you start/continue on your chosen course.
The eligibility award letter will contain a cost of attendance calculation that is made up of cost of living and tuition fees. We will confirm if you are eligible to borrow federal loans, and if so, how much you can borrow for subsidised/unsubsidised/plus/privately.
---
+++
Step 6. Return of Letter
When you have decided on the type and amount of loans you wish to borrow, then you should complete and return the eligibility award letter with the specified amounts. Any grants/scholarships being received should also be included in the letter.
Please return this letter to usloans@glasgow.ac.uk.
---
+++
Step 7. Loan Confirmation
Once your loans have been confirmed, and all steps have been successfully completed, you will receive a loan confirmation letter. This letter will specify the amount being borrowed, the disbursement dates, terms of the loan, and any remaining action required from you before receiving your loan (such as registration and setting up your bank account with us).
