Appendix A - Senior Recruitment Protocol

Protocol for new Management, Professional and Administrative posts at Grade 7 and above:

  • Directors of Professional Services (DoPs) should seek out Executive Directors (EDs) (and vice versa), and have a dialogue before new posts are created
  • DoPs may have to speak to more than one ED; EDs will generally have to speak to all four DoPs as part of this process
  • If no agreement can be reached, the COO should be notified
  • The requirement for dialogue applies to new roles but not to direct, like-for-like replacement appointments
  • Protocol excludes posts that are fully funded by external grants
  • Head of Finance will sign off new posts in US once the relevant ED has confirmed that dialogue has taken place and agreement reached
  • If DoPs are unsure about which ED to speak to, they should consult Head of Finance and/or David Duncan
  • Consideration of the appropriate grade should form part of the dialogue
  • The dialogue may also provide an opportunity to:
    • Discuss possible candidates
    • Discuss potential development and support of role holders
    • Discuss ways of enhancing collaboration in the relevant area
